GENEVA — The Red Cross says over 29,000 people in North Korea have lost their homes from storms and flooding in the past three months.
The International Federation of the Red Cross says it is working to provide emergency food supplies, water and shelter to 7,500 families in the south and southwest of the country.
The humanitarian aid group says in some areas half of homes have been destroyed by floods.
The Red Cross said Monday the worst-hit area in South Hwanghae Province is considered the ‘bread basket’ of North Korea.
The IFRC’s head of delegation in North Korea, Igor Dmitryuk, says the group is trying to find proper shelter for the homeless before the start of North Korea’s harsh winter season.

Don't do it! It's a trap!

I don't think anyone doubts that Clapton will completely and utterly miss a golden opportunity to shed some much needed light on the human rights catastrophe that is North Korea. But, a golden opportunity is certainly there. Clapton has two options as I see them.

1. He very publicly denies the invitation, stating that if North Korea would like him to perform, then he needs to treat his citizens better. He could demand he release political prisoners immediately.

2. He could accept the invitation, play the concert, and then publicly announce what a nightmare North Korea is for it's citizens. Hopefully, Clapton is not duped by the royal treatment by the North Koreans like Mega-doofus Sean Penn was by Hussein controlled Iraq and Chavez controlled Venezuela. Penn, took the bait...hook, line, sinker. If Clapton is flattered easily, then game over. He's going to announce to the world that gee, North Korea is really not a bad place and Kim Jung Il, we all just need to lighten up.

Don't disappoint Clapton. You could help provide moral support to hundreds of thousands of political prisoners who suffer in concentration camps daily...suffering unspeakable horrors. Don't screw it up!!!!

I thought the Philharmonic going to North Korea was a horrible idea from the beginning. Sending an American orchestra to PyongYang only increases the legitimacy of the Kim Jung Il government in the minds of the people. Every little bit matters. Some would say this will allow North Koreans to see that Americans are not the horrible enemy the Kim government makes it out to be. Um, sorry, but North Koreans already know that the United States and South Korea represent freedom. They only say they are anti-American and anti-South Korean because they do not want to be arrested and thrown in a labor camp where they will work 12 hours hard labor on one, maybe two bowls of rice.

Was reading a book recently by Natan Sharansky where he interviewed a former North Korean prison guard. He witnessed the the execution of a family that were deemed enemies of the state. A mother, father, and child. The former guard, fully remembers at the time how he viewed the family as animals, true enemies of North Korea. He believed they fully deserved to die in that gas chamber. Who knows what the 'crime' was, if there even was one. Doubt it.
But can you imagine witnessing the gassing of a complete family...before your eyes.

This regime must eliminated.

"I thought if I came to China life would be better", laments one woman. "I was wrong". Without Chinese language skills, most North Korean refugees remain at risk of being discovered by the police. "The police pay 200 yuan to anyone who discloses the whereabouts of North Koreans", explains one refugee. "That's what I'm most afraid of. I'm always hiding". Easy prey for the unscrupulous, they're forced to do dangerous jobs for little money. "Most North Korean women fall into the hands of human traffickers", states activist Tim Peters. "They're sold into prostitution". Unlike other countries, China classes North Korean refugees as economic migrants. If caught, they face return to Pyongyang and almost certain execution. "North Koreans are being sent back by the hundreds", complains Peters. Without external pressure, the situation for these refugees is unlikely to improve. Their only hope is that scrutiny surrounding the 2008 Beijing Olympics will encourage China to change its policy.

Iran students break campus gate in protest: reports: Iranian students staged a new demonstration at Tehran University on Sunday, damaging the main gate to allow outsiders into the campus and denouncing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, news agencies reported.
The protesters chanted slogans against the president and carried banners calling for the release of three fellow students who have been held since May in a high-profile case, the Fars news agency and state-run IRNA reported.
The reports did not disclose the number of students involved. Both news agencies said that the demonstration had been called by the radical wing of the Office to Foster Unity, a reformist student group.
"The students marched on the gate and damaged it, and this allowed several non-students to enter the campus. The students chanted slogans and carried protesting placards," IRNA reported.
